1. Diets Don’t Work

Repeated dieting impedes you from reaching your long-term goals and staying healthy. Setting restrictive “rules” are not long-lasting; you follow them for a short time and then you deprive yourself, get cravings, overeat and repeat the cycle. When you set these restrictions, you actually tend to eat more than if you give yourself full permission to eat what you love.

2. Diets Put False Labels on Food 

When you are dieting, you label certain foods as “good” and “bad” which leads you to believe that YOU are “good” or “bad” for eating these foods. A negative perception of food lessens your enjoyment of eating. Eating should not feel like a punishment, you should enjoy your food and the eating experience. Categorizing food will ultimately lead you to feeling dissatisfied with your eating, disappointed in yourself, and may lead to binge eating when you finally do give into your cravings.

It’s difficult to be happy when you deprive yourself. Food deprivation is linked to a fear of food, feelings of guilt when eating, irritability and fatigue. This puts even more pressure on your psychological health. Most diets tell you that certain foods are off-limits, foods that you used to enjoy eating. Studies have even shown that counting calories increases psychological stress and restricting calories increases the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Depriving yourself of these foods that used to make you happy will not end well, giving you another reason to ditch the diet.

By giving up diets, YOU are in the driver’s seat and YOU choose what you want to eat and when you will eat. Overtime, you will learn what foods make your body feel good, and you’ll have greater enjoyment in eating.
