3 Reasons Why You Should Never Diet Again (…And What To Do Instead)

I will never diet again. I say this with confidence. I know that diets don’t work. I also know that in my younger years, whenever I was on a diet, I was miserable. Oh, yes, I always lost weight on the diet, but then I gained that weight back.

If you are a dieter, maybe you can relate. Perhaps you’re reading this after “falling off” your current diet and you are desperate to find another way. Or, you are reading this and you are at your goal, having lost weight by starving yourself, drinking shakes or eating “clean” but tasteless food.

Here are 3 Reasons Why You Should Never Diet Again, and What to do Instead

1)  Food Obsession

Diets cause you to think about food ALL. THE. TIME. What did I eat yesterday, what did I eat before, what am I eating now, what will I eat later, what will I eat tomorrow. Whew, that’s exhausting. Food should not be the center of your day, food should not encompass your entire brain. There is so much more to life that you can be doing than thinking about food all the time. Ask yourself – how much of your daily thoughts are consumed with dieting, food, and your body?

2)  Feelings of Guilt

Diets cause you to feel guilty when you eat something you think you should not eat. The diets give you list of foods that are “good” and “bad”, “legal” and “illegal”, and foods you “can have” and “can’t have”. But what if you want to eat a food that’s on the “can’t have” list? Most often, when you’re told you cannot have something, you want it even more. So you indulge and the feelings of guilt, shame and harsh self-talk begins. Isn’t it time to put that to rest?

3)  Loss of Trust in Yourself

Diets cause you to lose trust in your body and your ability to make your own food decisions. You have been listening to what the diets tell you to eat, how much to eat and when to eat that you no longer rely on your inner body wisdom to guide your eating. In fact, you don’t trust that you know what, when and how much to eat since you have been relying for so long on external sources (such as diet “experts”, celebrities and celebrity doctors) and devices (such as a food scale). Does the thought of trusting yourself around food scare you?

If Not a Diet, Then What?

The key to getting the healthy body you love without dieting is to change your relationship with food through the process of intuitive eating.

The philosophy of intuitive eating encourages you to focus on habits and behaviors in a kind and compassionate way, not the number on a scale, while learning to attune to your inner hunger and fullness signals as your guide to eating. In this way, you develop a peaceful and satisfying relationship with food, mind, and body.

You were born an intuitive eater. Simply stated, intuitive eating is eating based on your physiological need to eat, not based on situations you’re in or emotions you’re feeling.

You are the owner of body, your thoughts and your inner signals. You have the power within you to take charge of your nutrition decisions to support a healthy life. The intuitive eating journey will bring you back home to the way you were born.
